At the University of Washington, the conversation on diversity and race has found a permanent home through the creation of the Center for Communication, Diversity and Equity.
Launched this May, the center is staffed by faculty from a range of disciplines, including history, American ethnic studies, sociology and others.
The center will focus on research and teaching, and facilitate lectures and collaborative projects between departments. It also will work to foster better communication between students and faculty on the best ways to talk about race, diversity and equity.
Long-term goals include finding ways to encourage students of color to pursue careers in academia and pursuing close relationships with diverse communities in the Seattle area.
