On Dec. 2, charities, businesses, families and schools around the world will participate in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back.

#GivingTuesday was established in 2012 by Henry Timms, now the executive director of New York’s 92nd Street Y, as an answer to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

As the day approaches, we wanted to share the plans of three of our many member institutions that are participating.

Moraine Valley Community College (IL)

For the second year in a row, Moraine Valley Community College will be celebrating #GivingTuesday through the Moraine Valley Foundation’s scholarship program which provides crucial financial support to needy students. Last year’s efforts contributed to the $100,000 in total scholarship funds raised.

The University of Michigan

The University of Michigan’s #GivingTuesday campaign, GivingBlue Day, will ask university alumni and friends to help them raise $1 million in a day. Donors can choose any program area to support.

Antioch College (OH)

As part of its #GivingTuesday efforts, Antioch College is challenging students to a contest with a $5,000 award. The student organization or department that earns the most online votes in favor of their favorite project will be awarded the prize. Last year the competition raised over of $25,000.
