Several HBCUS are getting an extra boost encouraging careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields thanks to a unique new partnership with Google.
Designed to diversify the STEM workforce and bring students out west to the hubs of innovation in Silicon Valley, Google software engineers spend the semester on a campus to mentor and teach students and advise the institutions on the curriculum. Students also receive personal mentoring, tips on how to send a professional email and suggestions on how to prepare for job interviews.
So far, engineers have taught classes at Howard University (DC), Hampton University (VA), Fisk University (TN), Spelman College (GA) and Morehouse College (GA). Students say they have benefitted from having real-life practitioners in their classrooms and feel more encouraged to apply for jobs at Google and other Silicon Valley companies.
